Communications & Power Project: Rio Tinto & Calibre (Pilbara WA)

The Rail Capacity Enhancement projects were part of Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s plan to expand its iron ore export capacity. Over eighteen months, Cape worked with the principal to upgrade the communications & signalling infrastructure along Rio Tinto’s existing rail network near Cape Lambert in WA’s Pilbara region.

10 Sidings were involved:

  • Separable Part 1 – Cape Lambert Yard Work Front
  • Separable Part 2 – Arches Siding Work Front
  • Separable Part 3 A and 3B – Harding Siding Work Front
  • Separable Part 4A and 4B – Emu Siding Work Front
  • Separable Part 5 – Ibis Siding Work Front
  • Separable Part 6A and 6B – Koala Siding Work Front
  • Separable Part 7 – Northern Link Work Front

The scope of work included installation of communications and signalling infrastructure; Pipe and pit, installation techniques included by plough, open excavation and HDD beneath rail infrastructure; supply and install of fibre optic cable including splice, terminate and test.

Cape managed and co-ordinated cutting into Rio Tinto’s critical live network.
